"Okay, look, I'm the greatest in the galaxy. Dominator's probably already in love with me, but this has to go even more perfect than usual. So I thought, Wander knows all about this lovey-dovey junk. So maybe you could, you know, help me out or whatever."
— Lord Hater

In this special half-hour musical episode, Lord Hater enlists Wander's help to finally ask Dominator on a date. Meanwhile, Commander Peepers and Sylvia team up to destroy Dominator.[1]

Episode Summary[]

The episode starts with a curtain opening, revealing Lord Hater's torture room and a bunch of weapons which, to no surprise, are pointing to a restrained Wander. Hater goes into a monologue about how he's waited for this moment, and threateningly laying hands on the wall over Wander's shoulders…

…and then whipping out a letter with Dominator's heart logo on the front and asking Wander what it means. Wander reads the letter aloud; it declares that Dominator wants Hater to see her on her ship. Hater and Wander, of course, takes the summons as a date, but since Hater doesn't know how to act lovey-dovey, he asks for Wander's help in wooing her.

Wander tears up, but at Hater's objecting, he dries up and begins to sing, "Ask Her a Question". Hater is confused as to what's going on; the title, "My Fair Hatey," then appears on a hanging screen. After Wander tells Hater that he needs to ask Dominator a question about herself, he hooks up Hater to an electric chair; whenever Hater tries to ask a question, it ends up about himself, causing Wander to give him a jolt. Wander sings again.

We then pan down to Sylvia waking up in a prison cell. She gets worried, breaks out, and goes to save Wander, passing by Peepers' control room as he's studying a plan of Dominator's ship, trying to find out why she's destroying planets when she could be conquering them.

Sylvia picks him up and she asks where Wander is. Peepers disgustedly switches the screen back to Wander and Hater singing. Sylvia drops Peepers and sighs, annoyed at the fact "it's always the singing."

Peepers then tells Sylvia (in song) his plan to freeze the core of Dominator's ship. Sylvia likes the plan, but she points out that he forgotten about Dominator's robot minions. Peepers realizes he can team up with Sylvia, giving her power gloves that can actually hurt the robots while Peepers freezes the core.

My Fair Hatey

Hater performs his song with Wander's help.

Wander, Hater, Sylvia, and Peepers then head out to Dominator's ship (without knowledge of each other), where they find her entire army waiting for them, though this time it is actually an escort. Wander and Hater head to the throne room while Sylvia and Peepers sneak into the ship's core. Hater is intimidated and babbles alternatives to actually asking her out, but they go into the room and confront the figure of Dominator sitting on her throne. Hater introduces himself, preeningly, with no response from Dominator. Hater then goes into a song-and-dance routine asking her questions about her likes, dislikes, and routine, pausing to express to Wander his delight at how well things are going.

Sylvia and Peepers then proceed to the core with no bots in sight, only for some bots to appear once they open the door and ambush them.

Hater's song develops into a power ballad about how Dominator is "the greatest in the galaxy" culminating in Hater awkwardly asking her out. Suddenly, the real Dominator enters in a towel and bathrobe, demanding what is going on. Hater is confused, but Dominator explains with annoyance that the figure on the throne was just her suit.

Hater reminds her of her summons. Lightly admitting that she forgot, Dominator thereupon changes into her suit and simply orders Hater to surrender. Hater is appalled, but Wander tries to save the situation by asking her if she meant she wanted to surrender her heart to Hater. Dominator, however, scoffs at this, revealing that her only interest in Hater is that he is the only villain in the galaxy who hasn't already bowed before her — displaying all the other villains captive in cells behind a curtain of lava. She demands that Hater admit she's the greatest in the galaxy; Hater eagerly assures her that there is a part about that in his song, and attempting to launch into it for her. The infuriated Dominator seizes Wander and Hater; when the latter asks if she doesn't want to date him, Dominator brays with laughter, and explains in a way the two "idiots can understand," by singing that she has no desire to play the girly part they want her to because " she's the Bad Guy."

Meanwhile Sylvia has been dealing with Dominator's bots while Peepers realizes Dominator's true plan: she isn't trying to conquer the galaxy — she wants to destroy it entirely. Appalled, he pivots to see the bots attacking Sylvia, with the giant bot then turning its gaze on him; he flees as it gives chase. Peepers frees Sylvia, but both are dogpiled in short order by the robots.

Singing of her pleasure in destruction, Dominator smashes Wander's banjo and gloats as the heart-shaped Planet Lamouria is sucked dry and broken. She forcefully explains that she doesn't want assistance or adulation. Wander and Hater finally understand how shamelessly heartless she is.

Sylvia and Peepers in the meantime bursts out of the pile of bots; Peepers hurls the frostonium into Dominator's ship's core, which freezes, causing alarms to go off in the main room, and interrupting Dominator as she is about to plunge Wander and Hater into a pool of lava. Sylvia grabs Peepers and flees the quickly freezing ship. She tosses them aside instead (advising them to practice their death-rattles) goes off to see what the problem is. The Watchdogs seize the opportunity to flee in panic.

Hater, however, is too bummed even to think about leaving after finally realizing that she is cold and heartless and don't love him. Wander, determined to look for the best in the situation, fixes his banjo and sings Hater a song about how they're buddies, though Hater denies it as usual. Wander's insistence enrages Hater so much that he blasts the prison open and chases after Wander, by which means they collide with Sylvia and Peepers.

However, the reunion is cut short when Peepers reminds them the ship is freezing, and they escape as Dominator vainly struggles to solve the problem. The quartet escape as the ship, including Dominator herself, completely freezes over. They return in triumph to the Skull Ship, though Hater and Peepers vehemently repudiate Wander's assertion, "We did it, buddies!"

At that moment, however, a glow bursts through the ice, revealing Dominator's ship glowing alternately red, then blue. A close-up reveals that Dominator herself has also managed to obtain ice powers from the event. Hater immediately collapses in despair — until Peepers insists that Hater is still the greatest in the galaxy. Transfigured with new confidence, Hater joins in the anthem, declaring the he himself is going to save the galaxy (while Peepers clarifies that he is doing so that they can conquer it later on).

From their Orbble bubble, Wander gazes in discouragement at Dominator's now even more powerful ship and laments that he has only made things worse; Sylvia encourages him, saying that now he has admitted the reality of the situation, they can do something about it. Wander embraces her, and soon both are singing the same reprise as Hater and Peepers, lauding each other as Hater sings his own praises, and all affirming that they're going to save the galaxy. However, the refrain is cut short when Dominator breaks in, driving the heroes and villains alike away with a volley of lasers, asserting with a smirk that the show is now over.

Dominator is cleaning up her ship, singing, "You're the Greatest", breaks off in furious disgust about the song's catchiness.

Memorable Quotes[]

Wander: So what do you know about her?

Lord Hater: Well, I know she's already seen my sweet car, my awesome band, and of course, my rockin' bod.
Wander: Uh-huh. But what does she like?

Lord Hater: Um, me. I don't understand the question.
Sylvia: (sighs) Always with the singing.
Lord Dominator: Okay, go ahead. Surrender.

Lord Hater: Wait, what?
Wander: I think you mean surrender your heart to my studly skull muffin.

Lord Dominator: What? Ew! No. (she shows them the captured villains.) Hater's the only villain who hasn't bowed down before me. I called you here to admit that I am the greatest in the galaxy.
Lord Dominator: I'm not the damsel in distress. I'm not your girlfriend or the frightened princess. I'm not a little bird who needs your help to fly. Nope, I'm the Bad Guy!
Commander Peepers: Oh, my grop! Dominator's not trying to conquer the galaxy so she can rule it. She wants to destroy it! Man, that's evil!
Wander: We did it, buddies!
Hater and Peepers: We're not your buddies!
Lord Hater: Now she's got lava and ice powers?! That's it, game over. We lose, Dominator rules.
Wander: Syl, I really made a mess of things.

Sylvia: Good.
Wander: How is that good?

Sylvia: Realizing that is the first step to making things right.

Background Information[]

  • This is the first full-on musical episode of the series.
  • Dominator breaks the fourth wall when she says "Show's over" at the very end.
  • Even though this is the show's first "Broadway musical" episode, "The Show Stopper" was the first episode dominated by its music.

Songs[]

Trivia[]

  • This is the only episode not to include the theme song. Instead, a curtain with the logo on it opens the show.
    • This is also the only episode in the entire series to have a title without the word "The". Instead, the first word is "My".
  • This episode aired on Leap Day in 2016.
  • From this episode and onward Lord Hater is no longer in love with Lord Dominator.
  • Also from this episode and onward Wander no longer tries to pair Hater and Dominator together after finally realizing Hater and Dominator as a couple is proven hopeless.
  • Lord Hater and Peepers decide to save the Galaxy from Lord Dominator so they can conquer it later.
  • Lord Dominator now has lava and ice powers, thanks to Peepers - though it was unintentional.
  • This is the only episode in which we hear and see Peepers and Dominator sing.
  • This is also the only episode where Sylvia says Peepers' name.
  • Interestingly, Hater seemed to forget all about being greatest in the galaxy, as he didn't respond to being the only villain who hadn't bowed down to Dominator.
  • The Frostonium was an example of "Chekov's Boomerang" (an element of a story that, when it has served its purpose, comes back later after everyone's forgotten all about it).
  • It is unknown if Iggy Starbeam, Gentleman Tooth, Night Mayor, Knight Mare, Ryder, Countess Slugula, Sourdough the Evil Sandwich, and the other villains escaped Dominator's ship, but they most likely did.

Continuity[]

Errors[]

  • When Wander breaks free and hugs Lord Hater from behind at the first act, Hater's lightning bolts are missing.
  • Before the end of the episode, Dominator's ship stops at the blue color scheme, despite the colors constantly flashing between red and blue earlier in the episode.
  • When Wander approaches Dominator (7:55) his left hand has the thumb on the wrong side.
  • During "Ask Her a Question," when the Watchdogs sing the verse a second time, their eyes remain stationary.
    • This is also evident in Peepers's eye when he and Hater exclaim, "We're not your buddies!"
  • In the brief shot of Dominator putting on her helmet, her left ear (on the side not covered by her hair) is missing.
  • During "I'm the Bad Guy," after Dominator smashes Wander's banjo, the spike on her helmet is missing.
  • At the very end of the episode in the Disney+ closed captions, it says that Lord Dominator says “Besides, shows over” instead of “That’s ice, shows over”

Allusions[]

  • My Fair Lady - The title is a pun on the famous 1956 Lerner and Loewe musical based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion; both the musical and the play deal with the complete makeover of the main character. (Loewe, of course, drew his title from the nursery rhyme, "London Bridge is falling down.")
  • Sonic the Hedgehog - During the line "something about herself (I already did!)," Wander is doing what resembles Sonic's running animation.
  • Street Fighter - Hater's movement when blasting an exit in Dominator's ship resembles a Hadoken.
